In Bring Back the Sun, Our Lady Peace singer Raine Maida sings, "A little white house is everything we dreamed about." Around the turn of the century I was a big fan of the band, and that's where my fascination with little white houses began. Even now, whenever I spot a white house standing on its own somewhere abroad, my imagination immediately takes over. Could this be the one? The perfect little white house? I never found it. Until now. Scotland.

A couple of hours from Glasgow lies the Isle of Skye. The island is roughly the size of the Dutch province of Utrecht, yet it's home to only around 13,000 people. On Skye, as the locals call it, every house is white. That's simply the rule. People live far apart, sometimes completely on their own, sometimes in tiny villages. What's remarkable is how much those villages still have to offer. No matter how small they are, there's always a shop, a pub and a coffee place. And there they were. Along the shoreline, on the cliffs and against the hillsides. Little white houses. Like a Labrador in a ball pit, I wanted to see every single one and take it all in.

So my dream house is officially on the Isle of Skye from now on. I was already starting to lose interest in Alaska anyway. The Scottish Highlands and the islands off Scotland's west coast feel like the world as it was meant to be. Cities and densely populated places like the Netherlands almost seem like a mistake. At least to me. Peace, nature, cosy old pubs, local shops and good restaurants. It all feels exactly like a film.

The black pudding at breakfast could be an issue, though. I suspect the Scots know that too. Calling it black pudding was probably their attempt to make it sound more appealing. It didn't fool me.

Anyway. Scotland. It doesn't get any better than this.
