What is a last and why does it determine how a shoe fits?
When you try on a pair of shoes, you probably think about size, color, and style. What you don't see, but which is perhaps the most important thing, is the last. After all, the last is the foundation of every shoe. What is a shoe last?
Shape and appearance of a shoeA last determines not only how a shoe fits, but also how it looks. For instance, there are straight lasts and curved lasts. With a curved last, the shape is slightly more curved, which aligns better with the natural shape of the foot. This gives the shoe a more elegant and slender appearance. The effect on the fit is limited; it is primarily a visual difference. Length, width, and oversize shoesIn addition to standard length sizes, there are also width sizes. Furthermore, there is something called "oversize." This refers to extra space in the length of the shoe, often at the toe. A little bit of excess is functional. When walking, your foot slides forward slightly, so you need those extra millimeters. More excess is often used in fashionable or pointed shoes. That extra length makes a shoe look slimmer or more pointed, without your toes actually sitting in that point. The foundation of every shoeYou never see the last, but you always feel it. It determines whether men's shoes or women's shoes fit well, fit properly, and are pleasant to walk in. That is why a lot of attention is paid to the last when designing a shoe. It is literally and figuratively the foundation upon which everything is built. |
